EU Could Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Official States

The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the US against five European individuals involved in fighting online hate and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron accused the US administration of “bullying and threats”, following the travel bans were placed on figures that were central to efforts to introduce laws regulating American tech companies.

“For far too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to pressure US companies to punish American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported the French president in condemning the move.

The restrictions were imposed this week on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with several activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance

This European legislation is viewed by US officials as a form of censorship, while EU authorities contend the rules are necessary to combat hate speech and disinformation.

This row threatens to become part of a far wider ongoing cultural and political conflict between Washington and European institutions.
