Nepal's Electoral Scene Sees Major Partnership Formed Between TV Host and Former Musician Mayor

In a notable development ahead of next year's general election, a pair of prominent figures in Nepali politics have teamed up. This coalition emerges in the wake of large-scale and deadly young people's protests that rocked the country earlier this year and ultimately led to the removal of the incumbent government.

A Commitment to Tackle Young People's Concerns

Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have publicly pledged to focus on the grievances raised by the new generation. This promise follows the turbulent anti-graft unrest that took place in September, which led to significant loss of life.

"Agreement should not be as the leader seeks, it must be what the nation requires," remarked Lamichhane after the deal was finalized.

The September revolt was triggered by public frustration over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This incident acted as a catalyst for underlying resentment stemming from years of slow growth and persistent accusations of systemic political corruption.

Terms of the New Electoral Agreement

According to the formal agreement, the roles for the approaching election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the chairperson of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's nominee for the position of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known fifty-one-year-old television personality, he established the RSP in 2022, capturing broad discontent with the nation's older political class. He has previously served in the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago freed on bail in a case involving alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a key player in Nepal's ongoing political transition. He played a role in setting up the caretaker government that took over after the ousted administration was removed.

Broader Government Discussions Taking Place

In a separate event, the current interim prime minister recently held consultations with several leading political leaders. These talks included former prime ministers and the heads of rival mainstream parties, marking the first such dialogue since the time of the protests.

After these discussions, the prime minister took to social media to state that holding a credible election is a collective responsibility. The message affirmed the government's commitment to guaranteeing a safe and fear-free environment for the electoral process, adding that efforts are being made to remove any uncertainty.
